Door Schedule & Legend

As I mentioned this morning in class, this week we are tackling door schedules & legends. This particular assignment can largely thank Revit’s parametric ability to work out the hardest part of the assignment. Prior to creating the door schedule and door legend, we must first do a little work to get the information generated to correspond to the model.

1.       The first step is to use the Room tag to created the room boundaries. I would suggest tagging every room then going back to renumber/rename them as needed. When tagging the rooms, the tool will look for boundaries created by walls to establish the extents of the room. If a space needs to be cut to accommodate two ‘rooms,’ (think kitchen vs. breakfast nook) use the Room Separator tool. Areas tagged will be shown with a lt. blue fill while using the tagging tool; HINT: other words make sure both floors are completely blue before moving on to renaming and numbering.
When numbering and naming, ensure that it is logical and easy to follow (101, 102, 103, etc).

2.       The next step is to number the doors using Door Tags. As we discussed in class, there are two options and I’ll let you decide which you would prefer to use. They are both found in the same area of the Annotate tab.

Revit automatically numbers the door in order of when they are place which means you will likely be numbering all the doors. We want the doors renumbered to correspond to the room which they enter. If a room has more than one door entering into the space use a & b (101a & 101b).  Do not use the leader option and rotate the tags to run parallel to the wall.

3.       Created the Door Schedule by right clicking on the Schedules/Quantities portion of the Project Browser and select New Schedules/Quantities. Select the appropriate options from the following menus to create the initial version of your schedule. Here is a good place to start:

Reminders: remember to use upper case, center text in all cells except for Comments, use appropriate annotations for door and frame material (aluminum – AL, hollow metal – HM, wood – WD), ensure your Marks use consecutive numbers, schedule should be organized by Mark (smallest to largest number), important to know that the Type Mark is not the door tag and should match the Door Legend which you’ll create shortly, and ensure that you’ve specified which doors are exterior and which are interior.

Here is an example of a Door Schedule for a current project currently under construction north of Lubbock. The entire project has 973 doors, this is a portion of the Phase I Door Schedule.

4.       The final step is to create the Door Legend by right clicking on Legends in the Project Browser. When prompted, name it Door Legend and set the scale at ¼” = 1’-0”. The view is now basically empty and things you put here do not appear in the project – in other words, doors you place in this view will not be shown/counted in your door schedule (this is important & the reason you don’t use interior elevations as a Door Legend.

In your Project Browser, expand Families (near the bottom)>Doors. You’re shown each door component that you’ve loaded into your project. It’s important that you show on your Legend each door in the model, not each door in the project. What this means is that if you have loaded a number of doors to find the one you like, do not include the ones that didn’t make the cut. If you have a lot of doors that you did not use, you may want to Purge your file (Manage>Purge Unused>Expand Doors and note which are checked>Check None>recheck the previously selected doors>OK). After the purge is completed, you’ll only be shown with the families that are currently being used. If a family has a number of door sizes check to see which specific ones you’re using before proceeding.

After you know what doors need represented, go one at a time and drag them from the Doors area of Families (in Project Browser) to the still empty Door Legend. When they are placed, it will likely be shown in plan view so change the View to Elevation:Front.

After the doors are dragged and arranged on the Legend, add dimensions (DI) and the Type Mark (use letters not numbers, upper case, bold, and italics) that match exactly what is shown on your Door Schedule.

Here is an example of the Door Legend from the previously mentioned project, use this as your example when creating your Legend – except do not use numbers as Door Type.
